Key Benefits of Ocean Farming
There so many reasons why we as a community should be practicing ocean farming, both locally and on a global basis. It's a form of aquaculture that is
- ocean farms are regenerative, they actually restore damaged marine environments
- ocean farms are completely self-sufficient and environmentally friendly
- offer a 100% sustainable method of growing food
- relatively simple to establish and doesn't require massive amounts of capital to setup
- commercially viable with excellent profit potential
- creates employment and job opportunities, particularly in rural areas
- the shellfish are superb at natural water filtration
- carbon capture from the atmosphere by the seaweed
- seaweed is proven to extract excess nitrates from surrounding and thrive in such environments
- totally natural with no human inputs required like fertiliser, chemicals, anti-biotics or feeds are required
- ideally suited to the waters off Bruny Island, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and east coast of Tasmania
- sea farms act as storm and swell barriers
- kelp has many, many uses, as food and as in ingredient in 100's of products.
- low visual and noise impact as the ocean farm is barely visible with all activity happening below the surface,
- act as artificial reefs, attracting fish and other wildlife.
- ocean farms can rebuild and restore a damaged marine ecosystem, turning an ocean desert into a place teeming with sea life
- offers an alternative to over-stretched, land based agriculture that can not provide the food we need in a sustainable manner.
